How can I become a private investigator?
Finding a job working for a private investigator or a detective agency is a good place to start. Employees of licensed investigative agencies must be properly registered with the state licensing authority. To be legally recognized as a private investigator, you must be properly registered with the state in which you want to conduct investigations. To become a licensed private investigator, you must meet the licensing requirements for the state in which you will be working.
Do private investigators have any special police powers?
Even though the State Police, Department of Public Safety, or the Secretary of State licenses most private investigators, a PI has no more police powers than the average citizen. In most states a PI license only permits the private investigator the privilege to loiter. Being a licensed Private Investigator does allow you access to databases that are not available to the public.
